Exposed: The Naked Portrait

Two of Matthew's portraits are currently on display as part of Exposed: The Naked Portrait, an exhibition jointly curated between the National Portrait Gallery and the Laing Art Gallery , Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

This exhibition of unclothed portraits from the National Portrait Gallery Collection invites questions about identity and gender, the real and ideal. It includes portraits of exposed sitters from Nell Gwyn to Naomi Campbell, Gilbert & George to John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The first portrait is that of Jack Birkett (1934 – 2010) was a British dancer, mime artist, actor and singer, best known for his work on stage as a member of Lindsay Kemp's theatre company, and in the films of Derek Jarman. He was often billed as Orlando or The Incredible Orlando. Most of his best-known work was done when he was totally blind.
